A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
