The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of case documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to delay the joint action involving a case that has followed the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Passage in Congress
The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.
Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Ensure full disclosure.”
Presidential Signature
The bill next heads to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.
Though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the uproar over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.
Support and Opposition
Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose personal information of witnesses, potential suspects and others involved in the investigation.
