Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
