McDonald's has pulled a Christmas advertisement created with generative AI after receiving considerable online backlash.

The brief ad was produced with the help of AI video tools and was originally uploaded publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Removal

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media lambasted the employment of AI in the film. Several described it as "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment represents an valuable lesson as we examine the proper application of generative technology," stated a statement from the company.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various situations that often go badly during the festive season, under the slogan "the worst time of the year".

The Movement of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that incorporate generative AI have become a rising phenomenon among major companies, notably for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly released consecutive AI-created holiday commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because segments made using generative AI are prone to distort the longer they run, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also raised fears about job displacement in the production sector, with some observers stating it might affect work for camera crews.

Defense from the Creators

After the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

She stated, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," she said. "We consider it a finished piece."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the response for some AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis garnered a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, various brands have likewise received backlash for using the technique in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics called "lazy" and "uncanny".

The incident underscores the evolving debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
