Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
