The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
