Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release their 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

The action from the DNC to block the publication regarding its own post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race seems stunning yet to be expected. Averse to hard truths, the party's leadership apparatus behaves more like a communications shop rather than a political organization devoted to cultivating a volunteer base capable of prevailing at the polls.

An Environment of Conformity

Hesitant to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has remained within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Releasing an official autopsy might have shown whether the leadership are interested to encourage open debate about the errors that enabled the former president to return to the White House. Yet, the committee is acting under the pretense that there's nothing to understand following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a rationale that has been offered for withholding the document.

Major Failures a Report Would Have Addressed

An autopsy report worth its salt would confront a series of difficult topics. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disengagement: Failing to retain of a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the party's candidate in 2020 became a critical factor in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • The Choice to Seek Re-election: The stubborn decision of the incumbent to run again, alongside an extremely delayed step-aside, has been criticized as denying Democratic voters of a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: Amid rising costs, the electoral effort allegedly bowing to powerful financial backers without successfully attempting to confront the role of profit-seeking.
  • The Foreign Policy Effect: The refusal to reconsider a policy position regarding a major international conflict reportedly led to alienating key demographic groups, especially with youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Young Voter Allegiance: Research shows a significant decrease of votes for the candidate among young voters.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold fits a longstanding habit to avoid difficult realities. This mirrors a situation in which the vast majority of elected Democrat in Washington went along with an incumbent's insistence on seeking another term until a catastrophic public debate performance compelled a reversal.

Meanwhile, a significant majority of the electorate had been consistently telling researchers that they did not want the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Questions

A substantive analysis could probe issues about where money went, including how much money went to party strategists as well as ad buyers over the course of a campaign that managed to spend a colossal amount during the general election.

The Broader Implication

Ultimately, the secrecy regarding the analysis points to an allegiance to the established hierarchy that oversaw an unsuccessful electoral effort. The signal to rank-and-file members – which includes millions of dedicated activists – appears to be that they cannot have a right to know what the leadership have learned from hundreds of interviews compiled from feedback from all states.

An organization unable to honestly assess where it went wrong finds it difficult to break free from the cycle that ended up being so helpful to the rival party.
